An interview with your Motivational Speaker and Positive Psychology expert, Emily Ferris
Emily Ferris is a motivational speaker who is "helping women shift their mindsets through principles based in science and God’s word." She created a tool called the Mind Shift Journal, which is a daily log of the four key principles of positive psychology.
I wanted to have Emily talk about positive psychology because I think she brings a more realistic and practical approach to bettering your mindset. As someone who isn't religious, we both have respect for each other's beliefs and what spirituality means for us.
Who's Emily Ferris?
I'm a motivational speaker, an entrepreneur, and in the business of shifting mindsets!
A lot of my story stems from my own challenges with my mindset. I struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life. As I got older I really took time to heal the pain points in my life.
I really got passionate about personal development and like anyone who starts seeing progress, I kind of became addicted to wanting to keep evolving.
I was always fed the narrative, growing up, that I either had to receive healing from the Lord or take medication. I really struggled with those being my only options.
I believe there are so many other practical ways to shift our mindset to live our best lives and maximizing our fullest potential.
What's the biggest misconception about positive psychology?
It's either you "fake it until you make it" or you suppress your negative emotions or turn a blind eye to what's going on. Which couldn't be further from the truth!
Positive psychology helps us learn the neuroscience behind the impact of changing your mindset. Like, there are exchanges happening in our brains when we process our emotions. For example, when we practice gratitude, we can actually see how our feelings impact our mental state!
So it's not about lying to ourselves or turning a blind eye to what's really going on. It's about understanding what tools and techniques we can use every day to rise above our circumstances. I think that's the most important aspect about any kind of holistic therapy.
Breakdown what positive psychology practices can do for us!
Take gratitude for example. It has a profound impact on our mindsets and it's actually the first thing I did to start shifting mine! Here's what practicing gratitude does to our brains:
It helps with entering a mental state of abundance and living in the present. It also has scientific components such as engaging your hypothalamus and ventral tegmental area (VTA) which are the parts of the brain that regulates stress and produce feelings of pleasure. So when you express gratitude (and you truly believe in what you're expressing), you're literally eliminating stress in your mind and body while at the same time producing those feel good emotions. This then helps to bring in more positivity and shifting your perspective easily and quickly!
By the way, gratitude doesn't have to be something profound. I can't believe it when people say "I don't know what I'm grateful for..." Like, what do you mean you know know?! Take a moment to be grateful the little things in your life.
Goal setting on a daily basis will keep your goals stay at the top of your mind and help you decide what it is you need to do that day to work toward them.
Daily positive affirmations that you speak out will help you move past limiting beliefs. What you say has such a profound impact (even down to the cellular level) because it's all energy, words have power, therefore what you put out is what ends up getting put in your mind. Think about it, you speak affirmations over your whole life, so choose your words wisely.
Mindfulness challenges can help you take a step back from your own agenda and goals. Sometimes we get caught up in our own lives that we forget about being present with where life is right now. This can help you bring your focus back, which can greatly impact what it is you're trying to achieve.
Entering into a new year, what do you think are the most impactful changes our tribes can make today?
Stay true to yourself to help you get your mind back to where it needs to be working. Your life is only as good as your mindset! Nothing matters if you're struggling mentally every day.
"Success orbits around happiness, not the other way around."
All of these habits are in the Mind Shift Journal, which is something that contains all of these habits I've practiced over the years: gratitude logging, goal setting, speaking positive affirmations, and a mindfulness challenge. I couldn't find something that could consolidate everything I was doing on the market, so I created this!
